DC Current Wire Size Chart: Sizing Low-Voltage Conductor Gauges Safely

1. Sizing Low-Voltage Conductor Gauges
In low-voltage DC grids, selecting the proper wire gauge is critical to prevent power loss and hazards. Conductor sizing is governed by two constraints: ampacity (safety limit against overheating) and voltage drop (efficiency limit).
2. Calculating Voltage Drop
Apply Ohm's law (V = I * R) to determine voltage drop across a run. In a 12V system, a small 3% voltage drop reduces terminal voltage to 11.64V, which can trigger inverter shutoffs. Conductor gauge must be increased for longer cable lengths.
3. DC Wire Gauge and Ampacity Charts
Always reference standard AWG charts for marine and RV environments. Tinned copper conductors are recommended for rooftop solar connections to resist corrosion and ensure stable resistance over years of travel.
